VIT student bags award

A final year chemical engineering B.Tech student of VIT University has bagged the Best Paper Award under the young researcher's category at the First Environment Asia International Conference, Bangkok, Thailand.

According to a release, Jason Ryan Picardo participated in the conference, which was organised by the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Government of Thailand, University of Kyoto, Japan and University of Liverpool, the United Kingdom.

The paper, Establishing the efficacy of the cleansing action of tropical evergreens: A modeling analysis of Asia's largest lignite based power plant, was co-authored by Picardo and professor Ghosh of the School of Mechanical and Building Sciences, VIT University.

Highlighting that developing nations of Asia would continue to rely on fossil fuels to meet their energy needs, the paper noted that mitigation of air pollution due to thermal power plant emissions assumed special significance in this context, the release said.

In this connection, the NLC had taken up steps four decades ago for a massive afforestation programme by planting 17 million evergreen saplings.

The fully grown trees now play an important role in abating air pollution in the NLC township, which houses 1,28,133 persons, the release said.

By employing a tailor-made atmospheric dispersion-deposition model, the study quantifies the cleansing action of these evergreens, the release said.
