SSLC toppers received laptops, cash prizes from CM

Chennai: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi distributed laptops to 1100 students, who passed out with flying colours and presented cash awards to 13 toppers of the tenth standard SSLC examinations.

As per the scheme launched by the State government to encourage students, who had taken Tamil as their main language, the Chief Minister distributed laptops to 1100 students, who had secured the first 1000 places, at a cost of Rs 3.26 crore, an official release here said.

At the Secretariat, the Chief Minister personally handed over laptops to ten students from the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram.

The Chief Minister also announced hiking of cash awards given to the toppers. While the cash award for the first rank holders was hiked from Rs 7,500 to Rs 25,000, it was enhanced from Rs 6,000 to Rs 20,000 for second rank holders and Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 to third rank holders.

It said 13 students, who had secured the first three slots, were given a total amount of Rs 2.45 lakh. As per the existing scheme, the government would bear the full expenditure towards the higher studies of the 13 students.

Students and their parents profusely thanked the Chief Minister after receiving the laptops and cash awards, the release added.
