Sports is an effective stress buster, says VC

Sports could be an effective stress buster, K. Vaithianathan, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University said.
“Stress and strain of modern day lifestyle is one of the reasons for many diseases. Taking part in sporting activities would help relieve stress and maintain fitness,” he said delivering the inaugural address at the University Grants Commission (UGC) sponsored national conference on ‘Emerging trends in physical education and sports sciences,' organised by the Department of Physical Education, Bharathidasan University, here on Saturday.

Dr. Vaithianathan observed that engaging in regular physical activity combined with a good diet was helpful in leading a healthy life. K. Meena, Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, stressed the need for committing to regular workouts.

“Brisk walking for a minimum of half-an-hour a day will go a long way in staying fit” she said.

She presented cash awards to four students – B. Veeranan (bronze medal in 800 metres and 1500 metres), Nikhil Chittarasu (bronze medal in high jump), B. Azarudeen (bronze medal in long jump) and L. Suriya (silver medal in 1500 metres and 5000 metres) – who won medals representing Bharathidasan University at the all-India inter-university athletic meet recently.

Dr. Vaithianathan released the conference proceedings, the first copy of which was received by Dr. Meena. R. Kalidasan, Head (in-charge), Department of Physical Education, Bharathidasan University; S. Sivaramakrishnan, Controller of Examinations, YMCA College of Physical Education; and A. Uthirapathy, Syndicate member, Bharathidasan University were present at the inaugural function.

More than 170 papers were presented during the day-long conference.

At the valediction, A. Shenbagavalli, Dean, Faculty of Education, Alagappa University, gave away certificates to the participants in the presence of P.M. Mansure, Syndicate member, Bharathidasan University.
