More than 20 pencil portraits of famous musicians by Ashwin Subramaniam, a Std XI student of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School, Nungambakkam, was on display at Sri Parvati Gallery on Eldams Road recently.

Inspired art

“I tried to bring out the exact expression of the musicians by observing them closely and by looking at their pictures,” said the young artist, who has had no formal training in the art. He had just attended a workshop at The Institute of Design in Chennai for two weeks. Ashwin searched for pictures of the musicians on the Internet and replicated them on his canvas. The portraits are sketched using pencil and charcoal.

The exhibition was inaugurated by musician Dr. Rukmini Ramani and mridangist Dr. Umayalpuram Sivaraman. Noted Carnatic musician T.V. Gopalakrishnan also showered praise on the young artist.

The artist collected Rs. 4760 by way of donations from his relatives and the public for his sketch of Sai Baba which he donated along with the sketch to the orphanage, Balagurukulam.

Ashwin's message for young upcoming artists like himself is that “one should take part in extra-curricular activities too while concentrating on studies.”
