HRD ministry to tighten control over foreign education agents

With an intention to prevent the recent Tri Valley Varsity incident repeating, the HRD Ministry has decided to tighten control over agents facilitating admission of Indian students to universities abroad.

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs is piloting an upcoming bill titled the Emigration Management Bill, in which the HRD ministry has mooted for changes.

Compulsory registration of enrollment agents and the creation of a database of students that would be going abroad for education are being suggested for by the HRD ministry.

The Emigration Management Bill proposes to modify the emigration procedure into a simple, efficient and transparent economic process so that it facilitates legal migration and also helps in enhancing the welfare and protection of workers. The bill will soon be sent to the Cabinet for approval.

Currently, India does not have any accurate database that contains the names of students who have gone abroad for education. This has proved to be a major drawback for several Indian students that go abroad for education as well as Indian missions abroad that have little or no information regarding them.
