1.5L ITI grads get better pay packets

Class of 2011 has woken up to the fact that the days of knocking on doors for a job are over. Offers are instead coming to them. Not behind the MBAs, engineers, science and commerce graduates are the 18-year-olds who are getting multiple offers at campus placements.

This year, the state’s Industrial Training Institutes with close to 1.5 lakh students have placed each of them for monthly salaries ranging from Rs 6, 500 to Rs 12, 500. “Till about two years ago, our graduates, with a lot of difficulty, used to get about Rs 3, 000 to 5, 000,” said J G Bhutange, director of the state’s vocational education board.

“We did not allow companies that offered less than Rs 6, 000 a month. After all, these graduates are skilled and companies must respect their talent,” said Rajendra Ghune, principal of ITI Aundh.

Volkswagen, General Motors and Indian Tobacco Company are the kind of marquee companies that recruited candidates from his college. “This year, we did not allow labour contractors and labour consultants to hire our students.”

While most students were selected through campus placements, every zilla also conducted a common job fair. “That allowed companies to select students from various colleges at a common place,” said Bhutange. Automobile, manufacturing, construction and retail were most popular among students.

There was a time when ITI graduates were taken as apprentice by anonymous units, tiny firms and way-side garages. There is no one left in the room for that.
