Updated on: Tuesday, February 22, 2011

IIM-Calcutta, the country's oldest IIM which is now celebrating its 50th year, will launch a special course on media and has begun consultations with various stakeholders for the purpose.

"We are planning this course initially as an executive course that can be taken by working mediapersons," IIM-C director of programme initiatives Prof Sougata Roy told.
The IIM-C held a 'think-tank session' with some mediapersons here yesterday to ascertain the need of the industry and finetune the course content accordingly.

"We don't yet know what kind of course would best suit the industry. Hence, the think-tank session was held. Similar exercises will be taken up in New Delhi, Mumbai and other cities," he said, adding that the course will be introduced sometime this year.

According to Roy, the course may initially be for three to five days and later, a long-duration programme where the participants will attend week-long lectures every two to three months. There may also be satellite-based programmes.

Once launched, IIM-C would be the first among the Indian Institutes of Management to introduce such a course, Roy said.

Explaining the reason for planning the course at the 'think tank session' here yesterday, IIM-C director Prof Sekhar Chowdhury said the media, with its 'tectonic shifts' like technological convergence and intense competition would require inputs from institutions like IIM-C for managerial talents.

The IIM-C already has 'Marketing Sports and Media' as an elective course in its MBA programme.
