Short-term workshop for biotech scholars held

Karunya University through its Biotechnology Department organised a short term training course in "Advanced Techniques in Animal Cell Culture - ATACC 2011" for Faculties and Research Scholars, from 24th Jan to 5th Feb 2011 at their premises.
Sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi this training programme in cell culture was mainly to emphasis the young researchers about the need for alternative methods to avoid the use of experimental animal for preclinical trials.

The training was a blend of traditional methodologies with more contemporary procedures from the basic to advanced techniques in cell culture. Cell culture being an emerging multidisciplinary field involving biology, medicine and engineering is likely to revolutionize the ways to improve the health and quality of life of millions of people worldwide by restoring, maintaining tissue and organ culture focussed the need of the course.

With over 300 applicants across the nation, 20 were selected to participate for this programme that provided practical training in advanced cell culture techniques like Establishment of primary culture, Maintenance and preservation of cell line, Isolation and culturing of different types of cells, Production of Vaccine, Monoclonal Antibody production, Human Karyotyping and cytogenetic studies.

Resource persons for the training programme include eminent scientists like Dr. H.Devaraj, University of Madras, Chennai. Dr.A. Thangavelu, Tamilnadu and Veterinary University, Chennai. Dr. K. Sasikala, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. Dr. A. Prem Kumar, Pasteur Institute India, Coonoor. Dr. R. Vijayaraghavan, Centre of Leprosy and Tuberculosis Research Institute, Chennai. Dr. A. Michael, PSG Arts and Science, Coimbatore. Dr. M. A. Akbarsha, Bharathidasan University, Trichy. Dr. M. J. Mahesh Kumar and Dr. S. Thanumalayan, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad.

Benefiting the participants to update research in their respective field of specializations, the various topics on the agenda for discussion were Stem Cell culture, Tissue Engineering, Vaccine Production, development of monoclonal antibodies for various diseases and applications of cell culture and its future prospects.

Dr. C. Vani, the organizing secretary for the programme and Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Karunya University, Coimbatore pointed out that this training programme was an asset to the entire scientific community and the department.
