The Madras High Court directed the authorities to constitute a team to study working conditions of PG Medical Students in Tamil Nadu.

A bench comprising Chief Justice M.Y.Eqbal and Justice T.S.Sivagnanam asked the authorities to take a fresh look into the working hours of PG medical students while disposing of a writ petition seeking a direction for the same.

"If the study report revealed a disturbing trend in error of diagnosis or treatment, the authorities should revisit the matter and frame fresh regulations to regulate the pattern of PG programme in line with the programme schedule in other countries," the court said.

In his petition, E.Pradeep Prem Kumar, a PG medical student, has sought a direction to the authorities to prescribe working hours, leave and holidays for students in the medical colleges affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.

In its order, the bench said the authorities should bear in mind that attentional failures in interns leading to medical errors may have disastrous consequences and ultimately affect public health.

Policy makers and academicians should decide what would be the best procedure bearing in mind not only the excellence in education but also quality of student training and more importantly patients’ safety.
