Karunanidhi government giving priority to education, says Stalin

The Karunanidhi government was giving priority to education and it was one of the States that had made the highest allocation for higher education, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has said.

Besides fulfilling all poll promises, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had initiated other welfare schemes too, Mr. Stalin said. He was speaking at a function held at the newly constructed wing of the government girls' higher secondary school here on Sunday.

It was proposed to convert 21 lakh huts into concrete houses in six years and this year three lakh houses would be completed. To clear the doubts as to how the incumbent regime would construct the houses as the State was going to the polls in May, Mr. Stalin said identity cards had already been given to prospective beneficiaries. Mr. Karunanidhi would be elected for the sixth time as Chief Minister and would complete the constructions, he said

Mr. Stalin said that so far 1,89,668 Self-Help Groups had been given financial assistance in the State.

Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said that Villupuram was forging ahead on educational front and in developmental activities. Free colour television sets had been given to all the 1,104 panchayats, 12 of the 15 town panchayats and one of the three municipalities in the district.

Earlier, Mr. Stalin inaugurated an exhibition showcasing the SHG products on the school premises.
