Students protest on varsity campus

Updated on: Sunday, February 06, 2011

A group of students of the Shree Motilal Kanhaiyalal Fomra Institute of Technology, Kelambakkam, staged a protest on the Anna University campus on Saturday.

The students accused the college authorities of giving them low marks in internal examinations because of which they have failed in the semester exams, results of which were declared on January 10. They charged the management with acting in a vindictive manner as they had staged protests in college after the suicide of a fellow student.

The protesters claimed that while none of them had been given more than four out of 20 in internal examinations, many had not scored at all. Most vociferous in the protest were the final year students, who said the results have made them ineligible for campus placements, interviews and jobs outside the campus. Students also demanded better hostel facilities.

The students had staged an all-night protest on Friday on their college campus. Anna University Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar held talks with student representatives and called up the management to rectify problems in food and hostel immediately.

Anna University would constitute a committee to visit the college to inquire into the low internal mark issue and suggest remedial action if the students' complaint was true, Mr. Jawahar said.
