Doctors should reduce diagnostic pain: Kalam

Updated on: Sunday, February 06, 2011

To reduce the diagnostic pain faced by patients, doctors should avoid unnecessary medical tests which add to their misery, former President A P J Abdul Kalam has said.
"Patients face diagnostic pain when they visit a medical centre with health related problems and doctors often advice many medical tests which add to the misery of the patients," he said.

Kalam was speaking after inaugurating an Information and Learning Centre at the Gulf Medical University in UAE's emirate of Ajman.

Kalam advised the students to remove 'diagnostic pain' faced by patients. "As future doctors you should reduce the diagnostic pain," Dr Kalam told the students.

He also said that there is an immediate need to bring down the costs of medicines while providing healthcare professionals with a forum to exchange case studies and share expertise which will help save lives on time.
