Updated on: Friday, February 04, 2011

Maharashtra Government decided to change the date of submission of proposals about opening new colleges in order to give more time to authorities
for scrutiny.
As per Maharashtra University Act, the universities were supposed to submit the proposals to the Higher and Technical Education Department for final approvals by January 1 which was changed to May 1 in a Cabinet meeting held here.

"The decision has been taken to promote quality of education and ensure that the colleges make available good infrastructure for the students," Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope said.

The additional four months would give the universities time to check if the colleges have followed the norms like having a building, library with at least 500 books, laboratory with proper apparatus, rooms for Principal and room, he said.

The decision would be implemented from the coming academic year and the Act would be amended soon, he said.

The educational institutes usually apply to the universities for new colleges till November 15. The universities concerned conduct scrutiny and then the applications are send to the Government for final approval.
