Indian Medicine Varsity to come up at Kanyakumari

A Medical University on Indian Medicine and Homeopathy would be set up in Kanyakumari district this year, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said.
As part of developing the traditional medicine like Siddha, homeopathy and other Indian medicine, the present six government colleges for Indian medicine and homeopathy and 26 private colleges would be included under the proposed University, Stalin said after handing over degrees to students of Tamil Nadu Dr M G R Medical University during their 21st annual convocation held today.

Stating that Tamil Nadu was leading on the provision of quality health care, he said the Government had alloted Rs 3,880.90 crore to the public welfare department during the period 2010-11.

He said after the DMK came into power, it was increased from Rs 1,487.11 crore to Rs 1,612.17 crore.

"Compared to Rs 3,391.33 crore during the period 2009-2010, for the year 2010-11, it has been increased to Rs 3,888.90 crore for the period 2010-11..", he said.

Besides he said from 2006, permissions were given to open 16 private medicaln colleges in the State.

Last year announcements were made to open new medical colleges in Sivagangai, Perambalur and Tiruvannamalai districts and currently construction activities are taking place, he said.

This year, in the Perambalur and Sivaganga Medical Colleges, about 100 students in each were expected to be admitted, he said.

Under the district wise medical college programme, he said they have planned to inaugurate new medical colleges in Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore and Dindigul districts respectively.

Currently there were 37 medical colleges in the State and 4,415 medical students pass out from these colleges every year, he said.
