10,000 Engineering seats possibly be vacant

Chennai: With the curtains coming down on the last date for Engineering studies, 1,32,400 applications were received according to Anna University sources.

It is likely that it would leave at least 10,000 engineering seats or more vacant this year.

On Sunday lot of students thronged Anna University and other 57 centres across the state to buy applications. Close to 12,400 applications were sold on the last day.

With overall 1,37,841 seats in 354 engineering colleges across the state, the university received lesser applications.

Applications received by post or courier on Monday would also be taken into account.

When the last date for buying applications ended on Saturday, 1,58, 136 applications were sold across the state. This amounts to 10 per cent higher sale than that of last year.

Counselling will begin on July 5 and end on August 16.

The selection process will begin on June 20. The rank list will be published on June 25.

Over 8,000 engineering seats remained vacant last year due to lack of enthusiasm on the part of students or lack of facilities in some engineering colleges.

 About 85,000 seats are available under government quota in the engineering colleges. Other seats will come under management quota.

Among the 354 engineering colleges, 333 are self-financing colleges, 11 are university-administered colleges and 10 are government or government-aided colleges.

The selection process will begin on June 20, when random numbers will be allotted to the applications submitted. The rank list will be published on June 25. The counseling is set to begin on July 5 and will end on August 16.

According to higher education ministry, there are an additional 3,360 seats in the general pool (government quota) this year. The ministry has also clarified that there is no hike in the existing fee structure both under the government quota and the management quota.

A reservation of 3.5 per cent to Muslim students will be allotted from among the quota of the Backward Classes and a reservation of 3 per cent would be given to Arunthathiyars from among the quota of the scheduled caste from this academic year according to the ministry.
