Verkko symposium on campus recruitment ends on a high note

Updated on: Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Management institutes and HRs marked the Verkko symposium on “Changing Paradigms in Campus Recruitment” as a revolution in campus recruitment and alumni management. The symposium was attended by 26 management institutes and 30 companies from Mumbai and Pune. Verkko was started as an alumni network for IIM-Kozhikode and today it runs alumni networks for more than 60 management institutes across country, providing networking and job opportunities to students and alumni.

The symposium began with a lecture by Dr Rajesh Arora (Director, ADMI) explaining an institute approach towards campus recruitment. Appreciating the interface created by Verkko, he stated that it was the first time that an institute was putting across the concerns and expectation by a B-School to the corporate HRs. The session was followed by Aparna Sharma (Director HR, DBOI – Deutsche Bank Group) sharing what the corporate world expects from the management institutes and students; also, the thought-process that goes behind choosing every new institute and every new candidate. While Anand Khare gave a consultant perspective on campus recruitment and how one can use social networking media as tool for recruitment, Dr Bino Paul (TISS) gave an overview of networking and employment from an economist point of view.

Vikhyat Srivastava explained how new advancements in social networking can benefit the management institutes, corporates, students and alumni. Talking about Facebook, Linkedin and Verkko, Srivastava focussed on the fact that while all three are used extensively for lateral hiring, http://verkko.in is extending support for campus hiring to B-Schools.

“Institutes have started realising the importance of alumni networking. Some institutes are trying to create own networks and spending a great some of money on it. But the response is not great as it doesn’t offer any value-addition to the students or alumni. Verkko creates and maintains the alumni portal for B-Schools without incurring additional cost to the institute and model has been successful because of the additional services that it provide to the members”, says Vikhyat Srivastava.

With the next symposium at Bangalore, Verkko even plans to open dedicated networks for medical and engineering fraternity.
