Nursery admissions - points system may continue

The Delhi government has announced that the lottery system will not be utilized for admissions into nursery classes for the next academic session of 2011-2012.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced that selecting students for admissions into nursery on the basis of lucky draw would be unsustainable for both schools as well as parents.

Dikshit had invited suggestions on Friday from schools on the admission norms that must be followed. She also said that in all probabilities, the points system may be continued without any modifications.

The chief minister described the meeting as a "broad discussion" regarding the issue and informed that schools had enquired her about how they could incorporate seats for their own staff and management in whatever system that was implemented for the nursery admissions.

Meanwhile, most schools in the capital have been in favor of the system of allotting points according to carious criteria for the nursery admissions, which is also being supported by parents. A body comprising of nearly 300 schools, the Federation of Schools informed that the points system will be retained.

However, the principals of schools that are members of the National Progressive  Schools' Conference (NPSC) said that nothing had been finalized as of yet.

A retired member and member of the NSPC, Suraj Prakash informed that most schools had proposed that the points system must be retained. "The chief minister heard us out patiently. She assured us that she will hold discussions with all stakeholders before the nursery admission procedure is finalized for this year," he said.

The Right to Education (RTE) Act forbids any kind of screening procedure for admissions into school till class VIII. Certain criteria in the points system, according to the RTE, had amounted to screening and hence the system's validity was questioned. However, the points system had fallen well in place and most schools have been in favor of continuing.
