Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has done away with written test for Anna University (AU) students with a consistent performance right from school finals.

With the seventh semester exams are over for the final-year students, IT giants are lining up to recruit the finest engineering graduates from the state. TCS, has wiped out written exams for promising students having good scores from plus two, instead will conduct interviews directly this weekend for AU students who had scored 75 per cent in SSLC, Plus 2 and engineering education.

About 1,400 AU students, who qualify the criteria, will face the interview directly without having to take the written test, says Professor Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, AU. For the others, TCS will have an online test on its campuses.

Academics feel that TCS is showing the way to other companies to look at consistent performance right from the school finals till collegiate education. Rural students with a good academic track record stand to gain in future, says Mr. Sekar. Selecting a candidate based on consistency than on an IQ or aptitude test is a good sign, he adds.

After TCS, Cognizant, Wipro, IBM, Accenture and other software companies will recruit AU students the following weekends. On weekdays, the placement for core engineering students is on right from July. About 500 students have already been placed in core areas such as mechanical, chemical, industrial engineering and for jobs that come with a salary of over Rs.4 lakh per annum, Professor Sekar says.
