Corporation schools turn to abacus for teaching arithmetic

Abacus method of teaching arithmetic will be introduced in over 120 state-run primary schools here in a bid to help students advance their ability in the subject.

The abacus method would be introduced to over 22,000 children studying in class I and II, Mayor M Subramaniam said here.
Teachers in these schools, who have completed preliminary courses in abacus, will be sent for further courses within three months.
    
A sum of Rs 1.32 lakh would be spent towards procurement of teaching material and books, the Mayor said.     
 
Similarly, training for post-graduate teachers in the field of computer science, physics, chemistry and maths will begin at the IIT here on December 18.
    
He said  geometry boxes will be distributed to 51,000 students of Chennai high and higher secondary schools on December 23.
