Future leaders

Indian model United Nations, a concept initiated in India by Augustine F Pinto, founder-chairman of Ryan International Group of Institutions and Grace Pinto, managing director, Ryan International Group of Institutions opened its 10th session in the Capital recently.

The conference was inaugurated by Grace Pinto, who expressed hope that at the culmination of the conference, the delegates will be able to propose viable solutions to the various problems faced by the modern world and enliven the theme of this year's conference, 'Thing Big.' On the opening day of the conference, Prasad Kariyawasam, high commissioner of Sri Lanka to India, while delivering his talk, stressed on the global need to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. MM Pant, former pro-vice-chancellor , Ignou, applauded the novel ideas that emerged at the conference.

The second day opened with heated debates and passing of resolutions. The delegates had an opportunity to interact with dignitaries like Rizwan Qaiser, professor of history, Jamia Millia Islamia, NR Mohanty, Colins, senior educational advisor for UK department for international development, Allistair Gretarsson, communications specialist, Unicef and Arjun Vajpai, the youngest Indian to climb Mt Everest. The delegates availed of this opportunity to widen their communication skills and leadership qualities.
On the concluding day of the conference , the delegates had a short session in the different committee rooms where they reviewed their discussions on different issues - narcoterrorism, conflict diamonds, xenophobia, nuclear NPT, controversy in the Arctic Region etc - that concern the world. The closing ceremony saw the delegates being awarded accolades for their worthy participation . The function was graced by chief guest Pallam Raju, MoS Defence.

He said, "The youth of today are the future leaders and forums like these will enhance their leadership abilities." Anita Bhatnagar, joint secretary, ministry of HRD addressed the gathering by saying " It is an interesting way to expose the youth to various global issues and expose them to the principles of United Nations."The other dignitaries were Shishhir Sinha, director, Regional Marketing Centre of the Ordnance Factories Board, Shannon P Hill, political officer, American Embassy, Eli Belotsercovsky, deputy chief of mission, Embassy of Israeland and Palitha Ganegoda, deputy high commissioner of Sri Lanka.
