The dearth of qualified workforce in the State is a matter of concern, said Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy here on Sunday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 14th State conference of the Vocational Higher Secondary Non-Vocational Lecturers' Association here on Sunday.

Mr. Chandy said not enough emphasis was given to vocational training in the present education system of the State.

“This system has led us to a scenario when there are insufficient personnel to ensure that the State develops at a decent pace.

The committee that was appointed by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to recommend changes to the existing education structure has urged for the merging of Higher Secondary School and the Vocational Higher Secondary School. “Such a move would bring several favourable and long-lasting results for the education system in the State,” said Mr. Chandy.

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, M.L.A.; Johnny K. John, Director, Vocational Higher Secondary Education (V.H.S.E.); K.P. Joseph, association president; and Shaji Parippally, general secretary; spoke on the occasion.
