IIM Calcutta enters its golden jubilee year on November 14 
The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, the first institute in the IIM System, will enter the 50th year of its journey on November 14, 2010. It was the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the country that led to the creation of institutions like the IITs and IIMs. Incidentally, November 14 is also the birthday of Pandit Nehru. IIM Calcutta, being the first institution in the IIM System, November 14, 2010 also marks the Golden Jubilee of the IIM System. Being an important landmark in the modern history of our country, they plan to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Institute and IIM System over a period of two years during November 14, 2010-November 14, 2012.

The celebration will begin with a 3 day event starting November 14, 2010. Dr D Purandeshwari, minister of state, Human Resource Development will be the chief guest at the inaugural function. Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia will grace the occasion with his flute recital. There will be a two-day convention on Management Education in India on November 14-15 where directors from all the IIMs and renowned management schools in India and the world, some noted academicians and industry leaders, IIMC professors and alumni would deliberate on significant issues and challenges facing the management schools in India and the way forward. On the third day the faculty, staff, alumni and students of IIMC will reminisce about the Institute in a session on“IIMC@50: The Past, Present and Future”. It will be followed by planting of saplings by different stakeholders. MK Narayanan, governor of West Bengal will be the chief guest for the concluding session. The three-day event will end by honouring retired faculty members, past directors, current faculty and staff who have served the Institute for a long period of time and contributed significantly to build IIMC into an iconic institution in management education.

 
Several international conferences, workshops and seminars are being organized as part of the celebration – International Marketing Conference during December 27-29, 2010, International Finance Conference during January 9-12, 2011and several others.

 
To celebrate the Golden Jubilee, the Calcutta Chapter of the Alumni Association is organizing GuruSpeak2010 with Marketing Guru Prof. Dipak C Jain, the dean of Kellogg School of Management, North Western University, USA from 2001 to 2009 and Dean Designate of INSEAD on December  19, 2010 at Taj Bengal, Kolkata.

 
Reminiscence, the Silver Jubilee Reunion of PGP 1986 batch, will be held on 23-25, December 2010. A grand alumni reunion of all batches will be held in 2011.

 
A commemorative volume outlining the history of IIMC will be published during this two year period.

 
Several dignitaries will be invited to visit the campus as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration.
