Updated on: Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Following demands to convert RGNIYD at Sriperumbudur into a Central Varsity, the HRD Ministry has decided to constitute a committee to examine and make suitable recommendations.

The committee headed by vice chairman of UGC Ved Prakash, with members like adjunct professor of University of South Australia Boria Majumdar and former athlete Ashwini Nachappa, will present its report within two months, said sources in the
HRD Ministry.
The move follows a demand from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as well as from some quarters to convert it into a Central university.

The committee will recommend the "appropriateness" of broadening the mandate of the institution to include sporting activities considering the importance of sports in development of youth, particularly focusing on both practice and research in the field of youth development and sports.

It would also be making recommendations on the financial requirements of such a conversion, said the sources.

Set up in 1993, the institute got the recognition of 'deemed university' status later.

The committee will also suggest the template of the governing structure, in particular, whether the structure should remain as it is for Central Universities generally or any innovative modifications are called for, they said.

It would further suggest the objects and powers of such a university or National Institute of Youth and Sports.

Vice chancellor of Central University of Jharkhand Prof D T Khathing, Director of Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala L S Ranawat, among others, are
members in the committee.
