Over the past couple of years the Vellore Institute of Technology, (VIT), which was started as an engineering college in 1984 has seen good growth. According to Dr G Viswanathan, Chancellor of the university, VIT imparts futuristic technical education and instils high patterns of discipline through its dedicated staff. “The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom and the Energy Institute, United Kingdom, apart from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology have accredited the university’s programmes,” says the Chancellor.

GV Sampath, VP (Operations), VIT University said there were 800 Chinese students pursuing courses at the university apart from many international and NRI students.

The university has plans to invest `100 crore for research in niche areas. It has also been sponsoring education for the sharpest kids in rural Tamil Nadu. “This year, 62 toppers in the Class XII Board exams — a girl and a boy from each district — have joined us,” says Sampath.

The university admits students every year by conducting a countrywide common entrance examination during the second week in April. VIT has six schools with more than 18 Bachelors and over 31 Masters programmes covering various disciplines such as mechanical and building sciences, electrical engineering, computer sciences, bio-technology, etc. The university also offers short-term certificate courses in foreign languages.
