Free textbooks for school children in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to provide free text books to 7.25 lakh students of the Valley who recently passed the annual exams from Class I to VIII.
The decision to provide free books was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister for School Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed and was attended by senior officials of the education department, official sources said.
   
In the first phase, the books will be distributed in Kashmir zone, where most of the students have finished their annual exams and are about to begin their new academic year.
   
The Government also has plans to extend the scheme to the Jammu division where most of the students are presently in middle of their academic year and examinations will be conducted in March, the sources said.
   
The education minister has directed the officers to ensure that the text books reach all the schools of each education zone upto November 6, so that the books are distributed among the children before the new academic year begins, they said.
