Updated on: Tuesday, November 02, 2010

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) started to operate special buses for school students on selected routes from Monday afternoon.

According to the government order to this effect issued on Monday, the special services are initially available through the following 12 routes  23C, 29A, 11G, 12B, 21L, 27D, 29C, 47, 5B, 6D, 37B and 38C.

Two special services will be operated on these routes in the morning and evening. Only pass-holders will be able to use these services, which are modelled on the lines of the 200 Ladies Special services run by the corporation.

Routes that pass through several schools were selected in coordination with the traffic police and the School Education Department. According to a survey conducted by the MTC, there are more than 400 schools and colleges along the routes of 23C and 29A.

The Transport Minister K.N.Nehru said overcrowding on certain routes resulted in school students travelling on the footboard of MTC buses. The special services are aimed at improving safety, he said.

According to the traffic police, eight school-going children met with a fatal end after falling off buses in the last two years.

Mr.Nehru said that if the 12 routes prove successful, it would be extended to other routes. Over 80 per cent of the schools commence between 8.30 a.m. and 9 a.m.
