Tamil rules the roost at MKU convocation

Madurai Kamaraj University, having about 1.34 lakh students under its Distance Education Programme (DDE), is converting all its study materials into self-instructional material pattern, its Vice-Chancellor R.Karpaga Kumaravel said today.

All the courses offered in the DDE had been given Permanent approval by the Joint Committee of University Grants Commission and AIl-India Council for Technical Education, he said at the 44th Convocation of the university here.

MKU had developed National Standard Infrastructural facilities for which Rs.2.43 crore had been spent. It had also received a sum of Rs.8.17 crore as grant from the UGC for the development of affiliated Colleges.

He said MKU had introduced four new courses – MA (Parenting), MA (Medical Sociology) P.G.Diploma in Edu clinic and Software quality management.

In his special convocation Address Sri Kundrakudi Adigalar appreciated the university's programme to start 11 community collegess.
In a break from tradition, most part of the  proceedings of the convocation was held in Tamil for the first time. Barring the Tamil University in Thanjavur, the convocation proceedings of all the other universities were held only in English.

Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, also the Chancellor of the university, was on only person to speak in English when he administered the oath,and conferred the degrees. He lauded the university for making rapid strides in various fields.

As many as 39,491 students got their degree both in person and in absentia. A total of 74 students were given medals and prizes. As many as 232 students recenived Ph.D degree.
