The Government today approved a proposal for incurring an expenditure not exceeding Rs 3000 crore during the 11th Plan Period for setting up of 13 new Central universities in the country.

It also cleared the process of taking over and converting three state universities into Central universities.

The proposal, which was approved by the Union Cabinet, is aimed towards increasing access and enhancing quality of higher education in the country.

The 16 Central universities were established in various states by the Central Government Universities Act, 2009.

While 13 of them are new Central universities, three have been established by conversion of the erstwhile state universities into Central universities.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, who chaired a meeting of the vice chancellors of the Central universities here last week, had announced several new initiatives which these institutes propose to come up with in the coming years.
