In a move highlight the ill effects of drunk driving, NCC cadets have come forward to undertake an 'Anti Drinking and Driving' campaign here.

The campaign which is to be held from September 27 to October 1 is led by NCC Group Headquarters, Mumbai and supported by the Traffic Police along with Western Indian Automobile Association.

Over 500 NCC cadets will participate in this campaign by displaying slogans related to 'Anti Drinking and Driving' at some important traffic light points such as Hutatma Chowk, Haji Ali circle, RTI Junction, Sadhu Vaswani Chowk, BKC Junction, Ismail Merchant Chowk, Shivneri Junction and Suman Nagar Junction.

This is one of the many responsibilities backed by the NCC towards society and is aimed to drive home a strong message, a defence release said.

The rapid increase in the number of cars on roads and an ambivalent attitude towards alcohol consumption has led to rampant alcohol use and binge drinking, the release said.

Spurt in drinking and driving has become a major cause for road traffic accidents, especially in urban India, it added.

In Mumbai, on an average 1200 drivers are prosecuted every month. Along with efforts by Traffic Police by means of regular checks at vulnerable areas, there is need for public awareness through such campaigns, it said.
