Regional reservation issue: 10 Cong councillors to quit

Ten Congress councillors in Karaikal Municipal Council have decided to resign in protest against the 'sudden' withdrawal of regional reservation for Karaikal students in private medical colleges.
 
Thangavadivel, Council Vice-Chairman said the councilors would convey their stand to Chief Minister V Vaithilingam and Pradesh Congress Committee Chief A V Subramanian.
 
Karakal is an enclave of union territory of Puducherry.
 
Of the 266 MBBS seats available in the union territory, 46 are earmarked for students from Karaikal region.
 
This year, the Chairman of Centralised Admission Committee announced that regional reservation was not applicable for private medical colleges.
   
This has given rise to resentment in Karaikal district. On Tuesday, the DMK locked up the Vinaya Missions Medical College campus at Karaikal.
 
All MLAs of Karaikal district carried out agitations in front of educational institutions on sept 1, while MDMK staged a one day fast here yesterday.
