Protestors lock principal out of college

Outsiders who’ve applied for admission to Heramba Chandra College locked the institution’s gate, forcing its principal and teachers to wait outside while they agitated inside on Tuesday.

They were demanding inclusion of their names on the merit list of those selected for admission. The agitation forced the college authorities to suspend classes during the day.

College principal Khagendra Nath Adhikari said: “The main reason for some 150 seats still remaining vacant should be blamed on external racketeers. A racket run by outsiders is active every year for admission to the commerce and geography departments. There is a great craze among students for admission into these two courses as the college is known for good results in both BCom Honours and Geography Honours. We are trying to clamp down on corruption. We have made it clear that no student can make it to the college unless their names are on the merit list. The only exception may be a few names forwarded by the Brahma Samaj Education Society and employees’ wards.” He added that external agents created a ruckus even during this year’s admissions.

“I sympathise with those students, some of whom left other colleges to take up their preferred subjects in this college. However, for the moment I cannot reopen admissions without further instructions from Calcutta University (CU),” Adhikari said.

Last week, the principal had informed the university about the problem. The Syndicate, CU’s highest decisionmaking body, has set up a factfinding committee. “The VC has assured me that a decision will soon be taken on the problem,” the principal added.
