Silence speaks loudly

Students from the Amrita Vishwa Vidypeetham’s School of Communication (ASCOM), Coimbatore, bagged the Jury’s Special Mention at the Face Video Awards in Calicut. This is the second film from Amrita to bag a prize.

Amrita Vishwa Vishapeetham has taken great strides since its inception and is now acknowledged as a leading research and teaching university — accredited with grade ‘A’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

Crafted over the course of a day by Bishwas Balan and Soumya M., The Good, The Bad & The Ugly portrays exploitation and power relations in a class-divided society.

The 15-minute film features no dialogue because in the words of Balan its director and actor-screenwriter, “We wanted to establish silence as a powerful tool of communication.”

Actors who were drawn from the Amrita Department of Social Work are portrayed waiting at a bus stop. And they interpret and portray the inner workings of the minds of people from different classes of society. Reflecting the kind of training students receive at Amrita, Balan says that they were encouraged to “confidently experiment, even with limited resources.”

The film which opened the screenings at the recent DBICA Short Film Festival 2010 in Chennai will also participate in the BIMS Video Fest 2010 in Kochi.
