Government proposes to set up National Academic Depository

Updated on: Thursday, August 12, 2010

The Government of India has proposed to set up a national data base of academic qualifications in an electronic format by an identified registered depository, said an official press release on Wednesday.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha today, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari informed that at present, there is only an in-principle decision to have such a depository.

It is expected to provide immense benefit to institutions, students and alumni and employers by enabling online access of academic qualifications, eliminating the need for persons to approach educational institutions for obtaining transcripts or for verification and reducing the need for institutions to preserve records in physical form related to academic performance of students for a number of years.

The system could also eliminate fraudulent practices such as forging of certificates and mark-sheets by facilitating online verification.
