Punjab Technical University wins the e-India 2010 awards

eINDIA 2010 Awards organised in association with Department of Information Technology (DIT) under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, were held at Hyderabad International Conventional Centre, Hyderabad on August 5, 2010. These awards acknowledge and felicitate unique and innovative initiatives in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for development in diverse domains namely, e-Governance, Digital Learning, e-Health, e-Agriculture, Municipal IT and Tele Centre through a two way process of jury evaluation and of public voting.

Out of 448 nominations received by e-India, 26 were put up online for the public to vote, with the entry receiving the maximum number of votes being declared the winner under the eINDIA Citizen Choice Award. The jury process entails that a group of experts screen through the nominations and choose the best project based on certain established guidelines and evaluation criterion and the winner is awarded  the eINDIA Jury Choice Award.

Three projects were submitted from Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, Distance Education, under the domain - Digital Learning. The EBridge and the Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Computer Based Tutorials (CBT) projects were nominated as one of the best in top three nominations selected by the jury.

In the Citizen’s Choice award (through Voting), PTU was awarded the Best ICT enabled University of the Year (LMS & CBT) and also as the Best Open and Distance Learning initiative of the year.

Name of the category: ICT Enabled University/Higher Education Institute of the Year

Name of the Project: eBridge

PTU has established a state of art Electronic Data Processing Unit that handles tabulation and declaration of result & Certification of more than 1,50,000 students enrolled in its distance education programme. In each session, more than eight lakh records are entered and processed. This EDP system, amongst other things, processes reports at click of a button, handles student verification, updates Auto Semester Progression and maintains individual electronic records of students and is scalable to 10,00,000 students. The EDP connects the university with the regional centres, the learning centres and the students through a dynamic web portal (www.ptudep.org) and the intelligent ERP software (web based) which is operated by the learning centre and supervised by the regional centre with a central server.

Name of the Project: Learning Management System (LMS) and Computer Based Tutorials (CBT)

LMS is a facility so as to supplement the distance education programme of Punjab Technical University. This is meant to impart an opportunity of learning to the students at his/ her own pace where he/ she has a dedicated online mentor, a large group of fellow students, various online resources and a vide exposure to enjoy applications of computerisation and communication system. In Learning Management System learner is provided with a login and user ID by which he/ she can get access to the digital content of the courses he/ she opted for. Besides that he/ she can also get access to the digital library, resource library, discussion forum, tests, assignments, notice board, chatting, notes, syllabi, e-book etc. The object of the LMS is to enable students to learn online, anywhere any time, enhance learning capability by providing gist of subject with animation and illustrations, enable students to learn on their own pace, enable students to make retrievable online notes tagged with the content, provide a self testing mechanism to the students for self benchmarking, scale up the education delivery system, provide a platform for faculty of our centers to share their knowledge in the entire PTU DEP community.
