Premier national law schools are now open to transgenders

In uplifting transgender to the mainstream,the reputed law schools in India have decided to include 'Others' category in application forms from the next year.

This is a perfect instance where premier educational institutes acknowledge their difference. No mention of Transgenders in the application form got the authorities thinking, as National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore vice-chancellor Prof R Venkata Rao states. He considers this an important move in the human rights domain.

The very idea of including 'Others' in applications will be put forward before the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) committee during October and November.

Stating that the authorities were bent upon including the section this year, Venkata Rao added that it could be included in next academic year as CLAT forms for this year had already been issued.

The transgenders who apply for the courses, will be selected on the basis of their merit. Rao also added that the students who will study with the transgenders will be given counseling.

According to Bangalore University (BU) vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev, some transgenders have a high IQ but they hesitate to pursue higher education owing to their fear of being discriminated in the society. Securing safety for the transgender students, Dev asserted that no student in the university should mistreat them. Moreover, the students who are accused of ragging them will be booked and will meet with severe consequences.
