Exclusive portion on classical Tamil from second semester: Ponmudy

From the second semester onwards, the prose section in Tamil will have a portion exclusively dealing with classical Tamil, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters after discussing the modalities with Vice-Chancellors of arts and science colleges, he said: “It has been decided to implement Classical Tamil as a subject in the prose section from this academic year. As it is already late this year, we will include the subject from the second semester onwards. From next academic year, third and fourth semesters will have both prose section including subject of classical Tamil in B.A and B.Sc.”

According to the Minister, in the second year, advanced classical Tamil will be taught. A committee headed by Tamil University Vice-Chancellor M. Rajendran has been set up to develop the syllabus and distribute it to all universities for implementation. This committee will complete the process by August 31.

Mr. Ponmudy launched the Tamil State Academic Audit and Accreditation Council (TNSAAC) website and urged teachers to create conducive atmosphere for students to learn more so that they would get more employment opportunities.

K. Ganesan, Higher Education Secretary, highlighted several innovative schemes that have been introduced in the State to improve the education standards.

“The choice-based credit system has been functioning in the State successfully for the last four years. We have also created centres of excellence in each college and have been conducting career counselling session for students,” he said.

G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, the University of Madras, said they had received a vital clue on the question paper leak and the issue would be solved soon.
