Punjab proposes amendments on NCHER Bill

Updated on: Tuesday, July 20, 2010

The Punjab government today said it would submit a proposed set of amendments to the planned NCHER Bill to the Centre so that autonomy of states and universities is not eroded by the centralisation of all powers with this central authority.

This decision was taken by the high powered committee on higher education matters, which met under the Chairmanship of State Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur here, an official release said here today.

The committee discussed the proposed amendments threadbare as proposed by the sub-committee and was of the view that the draft National Commission of Higher Education and Research (NCHER) bill dictates the unitary and central tendency of regulating, administrating and revocation of higher educational institutes and state universities, which was against the true spirit of the Constitution, federalism and democratic setup of the country
