Textile ministry reconstitutes board of govern

The Board of Governors of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has been reconstituted by Textile Ministry as the tenure of the previous Board expired on April 31, 2010.

Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran has included prominent Textile industrialists and professionals who figure in the newly constituted Board of Governors.

Venu Srinivasan, Chairman of TVS Motor Co. and Managing Director of Sundaram Clayton Ltd. is the new Chairman of the NIFT Board of Governors.

The BoG also includes Members of Parliament N.K. Singh, Deepa Das Munsi and Saroj Pandey as well as A. Sakthivel (Chairman, FIEO Tirupur), Sanjay Jayavardhanevelu (Lakshmi Machine Works, Coimbatore), Prashant Agarwal (MD, Bombay Rayon Fashions Ltd.), etc.

He was the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) during 2009-10 and is also a recipient of the Padma Shri Award.

NIFT being a statutory body formed in pursuance of the NIFT Act-2006, the approval for the appointment of Chairman and a few members of the Board of Governors is accorded by President of India Pratibha Patil in her capacity as the Visitor of the Institute.

Accordingly, the names proposed by Dayanidhi Maran have been approved by the Pratibha Patil.

NIFT has centres at New Delhi, Kangra, Raibarelly, Gandhinagar, Bhopal, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kannur, Patna and Shillong. New NIFT Centres are also coming up at Coimbatore, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar and Srinagar. There are currently 8400 students enrolled at NIFT for fashion designing courses.
