In a bid to meet the demand for tailor-made courses in the textile industry, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon offer specialised degree courses as well as short-term programmes in the field.

IGNOU Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Textile Management, Coimbatore, for developing these specialised courses. The MoU was signed in the presence of Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran and Minister of State for Textile Panabaka Lakshmi.

"It will have courses at levels of bachelors, masters and also M.Phil and Ph.D.," Maran said.  IGNOU will conduct programmes like B.Tech, MBA, M.Phil and PhD in in Textile Management as well as three-month and six-month short-term courses.

"The MoU will bring more opportunities for students willing to pursue education in the field of textile," said IGNOU Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai.

The courses will start from the next academic session. "IGNOU has vast resource centres across the country...it will help in taking the course to all corners of the country, and in the long term it will also enhance exports," said S.R. Pujar, director of the Institute of Textile Management.
