Hard work only way to bell the CAT: expert

Updated on: Thursday, July 08, 2010

Students have to prepare hard for taking up managerial responsibilities in their future careers, and they have to do a wide reading of newspapers and books while acquiring all the necessary skills, says B.S. Raman, regional manager, IMS Learning Resources Private Limited, Hyderabad.

“Students have to be passionate about reading. This is the only way to crack top tests like CAT,” said Mr. Raman, addressing the ‘CAT preparatory workshop' organised jointly by The Hindu Education Plus and the IMS Learning Resources at V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College on Tuesday.

He reminded the engineering students of the emerging need to acquire not only technical knowledge but also the managerial capabilities for brighter careers.

K. Mohana Rao, Principal, VRSEC, presided over the workshop, while The Hindu Regional General Manager K. Chandrasekaran and others spoke.

VRSEC campus placement officer Vijaya Maruthi Babu and IMS Learning Resources city director T. Ephraim were present.

Providing tips on how to crack CAT, Mr. Raman explained why it was very important for every student to aim at getting admission into the country's top 15 business schools, especially the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). A thorough preparation for CAT would enable a student to become eligible for admission to the next segment of top B-schools, even if he or she could not enter an IIM. This would be a passport to a glowing career inevitably.

Mr. Raman dwelt at length on the importance of paying equal attention to all aspects of preparation for the CAT and various other management-related tests.

The verbal section was the most crucial thing to crack CAT and it would be very difficult to overcome this for those who were not so good on the reading front, he explained. Management was about not just managing companies and businesses but also about dealing efficiently with simple facts of life, which would improve with wide reading habits, he added.
