Unique programme to nurture young rural scientists

Madurai: Shaping school students into 'young scientists', a month long orientation programme under the auspices of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology would commence on May 2.

Approximately 100 students of Classes IX and X from rural schools in Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts would get benefited through the attend the Young Scientists Student Programme, which would be held in the Lady Doak College.

'They will be given hands-on training in modern aspects of science and technology. It will be an intensive programme aimed at creating interest towards science among the rural school children,' S. Vincent, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, said.

According to Dr. Vincent, resource persons and experts from different institutions, including the Madurai Kamaraj University are likely to conduct the sessions on various science topics. For better understanding, the students would obtain training in both theory / practical.

This free programme is meant for school students drawn from rural and corporation schools, he added.

As part of the programme the participants would make few Industrial visits. Free accommodation will be provided to the participants.

Similar programmes would be held at other cities also for the benefit of students in other districts, said Dr. Vincent.
