Animation industry tipped to surpass 1 billion USD

Updated on: Monday, June 14, 2010

It is assessed that the entire world will undergo a sweeping transformation from industrial economy to a creative or knowledge based economy in the coming few years, and in this scenario, India is tipped to lead from the front. Despite the recession, the creative economy has dominated the recruitment scene by taking a share of over 45 per cent in the job market. According to the Regional Manager of Hyderabad-based Image College N.L. Narasimhan, “India's video game industry is projected to grow to 300 million USD by the end of 2010 and the animation industry is tipped to surpass the one billion USD mark. Bollywood is already said to be one among the world's largest film producing centres. Hence the options are wide and encouraging.”

The entertainment and creative industry can be broadly classified into animation, game development and design and visual effects (VFX). Mr. Narsimhan points out that the students should come out of the misconception that animation and visual effects courses were meant only for artistes and painters. “If one knows how to paint or sketch, it can only be a value addition. The programmes are open to all, irrespective of the academic streams. The industry requires people who are imbibed with the quality of ‘out-of-the-box thinking'.”
