CUs decision too late: Principal

Updated on: Saturday, April 25, 2009

Kolkata: The principal of City College, where a major ruckus broke out on Sunday, said the decision of Calcutta University’s Undergraduate Council (UG) has come a little too late.

”They have reiterated that they would not bend the rules to adjust students a little too late. The last day to fill forms was on Monday. Accordingly, I have allowed around 140 to 150 students to pay Rs 100 as fine for non-collegiate examination fees and an additional Rs 100 for destroying college property and allowed them to fill up the forms,” said principal Prasanta Mondal.

There are around 800 students from the college appearing for Part I in three streams.

The principal was asked how he would respond if the admit cards of these 140-150 students were cancelled by CU in the event of a complaint lodged about them being allowed to fill up forms in spite of poor attendance. “We will have to wait and watch what happens if there is a complaint. What about the other colleges, like Presidency or Brabourne? They also have the same criterion —75% attendance. But do all students meet that?,” Mondal questioned.

A furious CU official, however, said: “Rules and regulations related to examinations have been formed much earlier. Where is the need to reiterate those? Will we go on giving out the same rules and regulations before filling up forms everytime?”

UG council secretary, Shyamal Sarkar echoed a similar sentiment. “At Wednesday’s UG council meeting, we simply reiterated the rules and regulations, which had been prevailing from much earlier,” Sarkar said.
