Meghalaya Cabinet approves UGC pay scale to College teachers

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has approved the implementation of the revised University Grant Commission (UGC) pay scale and Dearness Allowance (DA) to college teachers with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006.

Education Minister M Ampareen Lyngdoh said the Cabinet had decided to implement the new UGC pay scale, considering the demand of the college teachers. The last revision of pay for the college teachers was in 1996.

The financial implication to clear the arrears would amount to Rs 70 crore, she said.

The state which would bear 20 per cent of the total salary to be paid to the teachers as per the UGC norms will have to bear an additional annual expenditure of Rs 16 crore.

The rest 80 per cent will be borne by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. Ms Lyngdoh said the government was working on the ways and means to increase pay and allowances to other categories of teachers as well.
