Bangalore: The Karnataka Government and Texas A&M University (TAMU) today inked a Memorandum of Understanding under which a Karnataka Centre of Excellence on Foods for Health (KCEFFH) is proposed to be set up.

Under the MoU, TAMU and Karnataka's University of Horticultural Sciences Bagalkot would discuss their capabilities, areas of potential collaboration and steps in developing a long-term and sustainable relationship and partnership.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Karnataka Horticulture Minister Umesh Katti and Vice-President for Global Initiatives at TAMU, Ambassador Eric M Bost at Vidhan Soudha, the State secretariat.

Efforts would be made to create awareness regarding use of more fruits and vegetables components in daily diet of the people, especially children.

The impact of fruits and vegetables components on improvement of the child health as an answer to mal-and under-nutrition would be studied.

The MoU also envisages development of better quality fruit and vegetable varieties using indigenous (local) fruit and vegetable varieties, which are hitherto not exploited to the fullest extent, besides using traditional knowledge of their use in vitalisation of health.
