Kolkata: Queens University in Belfast is planning a tie-up with four schools in Kolkata.

“There has been very little in collaboration between schools and institutes of higher learning in India,” said Dr S Kumar, Director, India Initiative, Queens University, Belfast.

Four schools in Kolkata have been identified for tie-ups. These are: Modern High School, Don Bosco, St Xavier’s and La Martinere (boys and girls).

“We chose key schools in the city. The response has been enthusiastic,” said Kumar, a graduate of North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and JNU, Delhi.

There are no tie-ups with specific departments at Queens University and the schools. The collaboration, hoped Kumar, would lead to students and their families making a more informed decision.

“We want to help bridge the cultural and academic shock in the digital age. We also want to involve their families when it comes to making a decision for higher studies,” said Kumar.

The collaboration involves faculty from Queens University travelling to Kolkata and delivering lectures on a range of subjects. The objective of which to gauge what level students in the city are at, what they are interested in and what they want in a degree.

It is hoped that students will also be better able to take decisions on what and where they want to study.

The British Council is helping with the project. “We have presented a pilot study to the British Council,” said Kumar.

Queens University is also planning similar tie-ups with schools in Delhi.
