Amalgamation is the new mantra

With the Board exams looming large and the IIT-JEE to follow, there appears to be no respite for students who are already in study mode. Medical entrance exams follow the JEE exams and so it goes on. Many students find it hard to cope with the number of exams they have to give for admission to various institutes. And sometimes, tests overlap so students have to forgo one or the other depending on which institute he/she favours.

And while there has been an initiative by the government to create one single test for entry into engineering colleges, for instance, in many cases, students still have to take the respective college tests to get admission.
Now in a first move, the Delhi Technological University (DTU) will use the AIEEE scores for admission to their institute. It may be mentioned here that DTU had its own exam for entry. Formerly known as the
Delhi College of Engineering, an affiliated college of Delhi University (DU), DTU has been upgraded to
an university.

In the meanwhile, HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal wanted more weightage to be given to the Class XII Board exam for the IIT entrance exam and proposed raising the required minimum of 60 per cent marks to at least 80 per cent.
For students appearing for medical entrances the case is the same — a rush from college to college. Now the Medical Council of India (MCI) the regulatory body for medical education, has proposed one exam for all medical colleges in the country. This will cover 290 medical colleges, both private and government-run. Such a move, the MCI says, will do away with the practice of students taking multiple entrance exams and provide a fair and transparent selection procedure based on merit.
The MCI wants a common admission criteria to be adopted across India. The exam should, the MCI feels, be conducted by a national regulatory body.
