Summer placements pick up at management institutes of IIT

Mumbai: With `green-shoots' in the economy beginning to emerge, India Inc is gearing-up for a round of recruitments, especially from campuses.

Campus recruitments had witnessed a slowdown in the last year, following the global economic meltdown.
      
However, summer placements at a prestigious Mumbai management institute have been high and if this is any indication, then campus recruitments could be back on track this year.
      
The management college of IIT Bombay, Shailesh  J Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), has seen a heartening summer placement for its students with new companies spanning sectors comprising entering the placements scene for the first time.
      
Interestingly, these new companies comprise 33 per cent of the total 56 companies which offered internships to the entire 2009-11 batch of 98 students of SJMSOM,  the college said in a statement here.
      
Almost all the major sectors such as FMCG, banking and finance, auto and manufacturing, systems and IT,  telecom and pharmaceuticals were represented.
      
The highest stipend for many students of the institute surpassed the six-figure mark this year, the statement said.
   
These companies offered students internships across various verticals and functional domains such as investment banking, private equity, project finance, equity research, sales, marketing and technology advisory, among others.
   
Students were offered internships from even sunrise sectors for profiles like energy efficiency advisory  and green finance.
   
Around 33 per cent of the offers came from FMCG companies like Asian Paints, Cadbury, Colgate-Palmolive, L'Oreal, Marico, ITC, Johnson & Johnson and P&G.
   
Finance remained attractive for students with 23 per cent of the batch opting for internships in various financial services companies like HSBC, JP Morgan Chase,  ICICI Bank, Future Capital Holdings, SBI Capital and Future Generali Insurance.
   
Consulting majors like Deloitte, Capgemini Business Consulting, Frost and Sullivan and Synovate Business Consulting offered challenging profiles to SJMSOM students in domains like IT, business strategy and market technology.
   
Various companies from the manufacturing sector like BPCL, Croda Chemicals, Cummins, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, GE -Oil and Gas and Tata Motors offered interships in profiles like marketing, operations and corporate finance, among others.
   
The college also saw IT and ITeS companies like TCS, Wipro, Genpact and eClerx offering niche roles such as analytics, advisory and business development to the students.
