English training for engineering graduates

Chennai: Free English training for engineering students to improve employment opportunities is offered at British council.

In the vision to enhance employability of engineering students, free Business English Certification (BEC) training will be offered to college graduates of 2009 through a joint initiative by Education Matters along with the University of Leicester For the first phase of Learn Business English initiative, Education Matters, an international education consulting company, and the University of Leicester offers 40 hours of training for 200 graduating engineering students on the first-come-first-served basis during July 2009 free of charge.

Education Matters Director Madhan said, depending on the response, they would offer more such programmes.

Recognizing Indian students weakness in their English communication skills at the professional environment this initiative would escalate the individual’s English communication standards.

As some students are technically capable, however are not able to get ready employment. The students will receive training from British Council faculty and will receive a certificate of participation.

The initiative covers the cost of training fees and study materials, but students must register for the official BEC examination on their own. The cost of the BEC exam is Rs.2,050, Rs.2,500, and Rs.3,300, for the preliminary, vantage, and higher certification levels respectively.

The Learn Business English initiative includes training in communication skills with regard to personal identification, buying and selling transactions, travel and conferences, and professional relationships.

However, he told that this exam is not to be confused with the IELTS, as the two exams have two distinct purposes and grading systems.

The BEC is a certification programme to enhance business English proficiency whereas, the IELTS is used to screen students wishing to study abroad or move overseas.
