Directors for two new IITs appointed

New Delhi: The Government has appointed directors for IIT Indore and IIT Mandi, which will start unctioning from the coming academic session.

Prof Timothy Gonsalves, who is head of Computer Science Department at IIT Madras, has been appointed as the Director of IIT Mandi in Himachal Pradesh while Pradeep Mathur â€“ Professor, Department of Chemistry IIT Bombay -- has been appointed as the director of IIT Indore.

The names of Gonsalves and Mathur were recommended by a search and selection committee and approved by the IIT Council and Appointment Committee of the Cabinet, official sources said.

Earlier in the month of May, the Government had appointed directors for six new IITs which have already started functioning.

With this appointment, the two new IITs will now decide the courses they will offer and also start the appointment of faculty.

The Government has set up eight new IITs in the last one year, taking the number of the elite institutions to 15. The new IITs have been allowed to recruit 30 teachers each for running regular courses.

The IIT Indore will be set up at the Military Headquarters of Work (MHoW) near Indore, where the Madhya Pradesh government has provided 500 acres of land. The IIT in Himachal Pradesh will be set up in 500 acres of land in Mandi made available by the state government.

Prof U B Desai, Prof M K Surappa, Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain, Prof Prem Kumar Kalra, Prof Madhusudan Chakroborty and Prof Anil Bhowmick have already been appointed for the IITs at Hyderabad, Ropar, Gandhinagar, Rajasthan, Bhubaneswar and Patna respectively.

The admission process to the IITs will commence in the month of April after the result of the IIT-JEE is out. The IIT-JEE will be held in second week of April. With the new IITs, the intake capacity of the elite institutions will go beyond 10,000.
